Fieldwork in Argentina and visiting position at the Universidad Austral in Buenos Aires, April 2025

I spent three weeks in amazing Buenos Aires interviewing local elites about their perceptions of China’s role in the country.

As part of my postdoc project run by Dr Jamie Gruffydd-Jones at the University of Kent, School of Economics, Politics and International Relations, I was hosted as a visiting researcher at the Escuela de Gobierno, Universidad Austral, in Buenos Aires, to explore local knowledge production about China.

The PRC is a pivotal partner in Argentina’s economy and at times a controversial one in local politics. I got the chance to ask about Chinese finance and investments in infrastructures, China’s economic role in both trade and industry, the relationship between China and Peronism historically and at present, the perspectives of anti-Peronist parties and the relationship between Argentine and Chinese academia and intellectual elites.

It was a successful trip where I interviewed dozens of people. I really would like to thank Luciano Bolinaga, Martin Montes and Juan de Dios Cincunegui amongst many others for the fundamental help and support.
